No. 1 Continue taking life lightly: With the god’s grace you survive the accident, but habit of taking life lightly continues. You think that as luck smiles on you this time, it will remain same in the future also. But remember, everyone deserves a second chance but not for the same mistake!
While the accident panics you, this thought should make you understand the importance of term insurance plans, which protect your family financially even in your absence. Moreover, you can also buy it online and save both your time and money. Further, you can go ahead and buy an accidental death benefit rider, which would pay double the sum assured to your nominee in case you die in an accident.
No.2: Not document the crash: After you have called the police and checked for casualties, document the wreck. You should note down the other driver’s name, address, mobile number, insurance policy name, and policy number. As it is mandatory to have at least third-party insurance to ply a vehicle on Indian roads, having all this information will help you later in getting a claim.
No.3: Lose temper: A car crash is never a pleasant accident. It hurts you both physically and financially. But in spite of this, it’s never a good idea to lose your cool. Even if it was not your fault, the first thing that you should ask the other driver is, “Are you alright”? Don’t start yelling or putting the blame. Take deep breaths and stay calm as it would help you to make a better assessment of the situation.
No. 4: Not call the police: Some of us believe that if no one is hurt in an accident, there is no need to call the police. But this is a bad idea and here’s why.
Let’s say you and the other party involved in the accident make a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ not to call the police and let the insurance company handle the things by their own. But what if your insurance company refuses to settle the claim due to the absence of FIR report? If you don’t get the police report documenting your accident, what proof do you have that it actually happened?
Even if the other driver tries to settle the claim with you and insists you on not informing the police, never agree to it. The chances are that his car insurance policy is outdated or fake. Do yourself a favor and call the police.
So, the next time you involved in a car accident, make sure not to do the things which we listed above. Remember, better safe than sorry!
